  • Communicable Disease Prevention

    This program routinely investigates and aids in the prevention of the spread of reportable communicable diseases through investigation and education by Prevention Nurses Team and Environmental Health Staff. This involves interaction with county residents, medical facilities, nursing homes, local physicians, and other county health departments. It includes the following activities, as well as STD and TB testing and treatment:

    Disease investigation and surveillance

    Disease outbreak control and case management

    Immunizations against infectious disease

    Prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted disease

    Tuberculosis screening and investigation

  • Health Education

    School and Community-based Programs are shared by staff as requests are made. In some circumstances, materials and/or equipment, such as the Glo-Germ machine, may be loaned out for short periods of time. Oral Hygiene programs are facilitated by either trained WIC staff of HeadStart Cavity-Free Kids Program Staff. Veggie Mobile Program runs from June through September.

    Reproductive Health Education: goals include increasing knowledge of CCHD services, increase personal knowledge of reproductive health, reduce adolescent pregnancies, reduce sexually transmitted infections.

    Communicable disease may be spread from person to person or animal to person through bodily fluids or direct contact. Spread of contagious disease may also occur by inhaling infected air or ingesting infected food or water. Essex County Public Health Department is responsible for minimizing the impact of communicable disease, through mandated activities such as investigation, reporting, education and outreach, and promoting prevention strategies. Essex County Public Health offers immunizations, prevention and control of rabies, tick and mosquito-borne disease, and education, screening, and counseling for HIV, HCV, and STD.

    The Environmental Health Division of the Cattaraugus County Department of Health is charged with enforcement of the NYS Sanitary Code (10 NYCRR), NYS Public Health Law and the Sanitary Code of the Cattaraugus County Health District. In addition, we issue permits and review engineering plans for many associations, businesses and activities, which potentially impact public health. All fees charged by the Environmental Health Division are established by the Cattaraugus County Legislature (Environmental Health Services Fees).
