Advocacy/support services may be individual advocacy or systems advocacy (or a combination of both. Examples are warm lines, hot lines, teaching daily living skills, providing representative payee services, and training in any aspect of mental health services. Individual advocacy assists consumers in protecting and promoting their rights, resolving complaints and grievances, and accessing services and supports of their choice. Systems advocacy represent the concerns of a class of consumers by identifying patterns of problems and complaints and working with program or system administrators to resolve or eliminate these problems on a systemic, rather than individual basis.
The Crime Victims Assistance Center, (CVAC), provides crisis hotline, counseling, crime victims compensation assistance, advocacy, legal and hospital accompaniment, forensic examinations for victims of sexual assault and rape.
Broome County Department of Social Services (DSS) provides a Liaison to SSI who assists disabled recipients to pursue Supplemental Security Income benefits through the Social Security Administration and assists in securing disabled status for Medicaid clients.
Finger Lakes Independence Center (FLIC) provides services for people with disabilities and their families. FLIC provides advocacy in health care, employment, housing, education, civil rights, and many more. FLIC is a part of the Statewide Systems Advocacy Network, under the New York Association of Independent Living.
The Re-Entry program opertated by Catholic Charities offers assistance to families of hospitalized children (5-17 yrs) with extreme mental health needs who are preparing for discharge back to the home. Assists in communication between families and the hospital, provides support for parents via parent partner and support groups, assists in discharge planning and connecting child with any needed in-home services.
Habilitation Programs help people with developmental disabilities learn, improve, or maintain independent living skills both within the home and in the community. ommunity Habilitation Program can help you improve independent living skills like:
Household tasks (cooking, cleaning, etc.)
Money management (basic math skills, budgeting, etc.)
Health and personal hygiene skills
Social skills and strategies for behavior modification
Life safety skills
Career exploration through volunteering
Communication skills

In order to sign up for our Habilitation Program, you must first establish eligibility through the NYS Office for People with Developmental Disabilities Front Door.
Early Recognition Screening is a free program which uses the Pediatric Symptom Checklist screening tool. This may identify the presence of mental health issues in children, so that community resources for treatment can be provided when needed.
