Temporary Assistance (TA) is the term now used in NYS for Public Assistance (welfare) programs. The term conveys the message that assistance is short-term help for families and individuals while they work their way toward self-sufficiency. Program has an employment focus. TA clients receive money for basic living expenses, food stamps and medical coverage. Eligibility is based on the income and resources of the family. Family Assistance provides money to families with children and Safety Net Assistance provides money for basic living expenses for single adults and childless couples.
Emergency Assistance for Adults (EAA) is a short-term program to meet the emergency needs of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients.
Emergency Assistance for Families (EAF) is a short-term program to meet the emergency needs of families.
Temporary Assistance is Chautauqua County's term for federal and state temporary assistance programs. These programs give short-term help to families and individuals as they work toward self-sufficiency; Family Assistance provides cash assistance to needy families that include a minor child living with a parent (including families where both parents are in the household) or a caretaker relative; Safety Net assistance; Services and Assistance Programs for Non-Parent Caregivers; indigent burials (Indigent Burials -The local district provides for burial when a Temporary Assistance recipient or other indigent person dies leaving no funds or insurance sufficient to pay the cost and there are no relatives, friends or other persons liable or willing to take responsibility for the burial expense.) Home Energy Assistance Program
HEAP is a federally funded program that assists low-income New Yorkers with the cost of heating their homes. HEAP also offers an emergency benefit for eligible households in a heat or heat related energy emergency.
Temporary Assistance provides financial help to those families or individuals who qualify. Emergency assistance may also be available.

The Temporary Assistance Unit works closely with individuals to achieve the goal of increasing self sufficiency. Examiners determine and monitor eligibility for Temporary Assistance (Family Assistance and Safety Net Assistance) and such programs as Food Stamps, Medicaid, Emergency Aid, and Home Energy Assistance Program. Assistance in obtaining such benefits as child support, daycare, and safe affordable housing can make the difference that overcomes barriers to employment and family stability.
Emergency Assistance is available to assist those households in a crisis situation even though they may be ineligible for ongoing assistance. These applicants seek help when their income is not sufficient to pay their rent, heat/utility bills, for food or if there is a need to replace clothing or furniture lost in a fire or other disaster.
