The NYS Department of Labor operates the Division of Safety and Health, (DOSH), which is responsible for enforcement of NYS Labor Law and Code Rules & Regulations. These cover public safety and health in the private employment sector and occupational safety and health in the public employment sector.
All bona fide complaints are responded to and investigated by our inspectors. Follow-up on corrections of violations are addressed.
The Broome County Health Department offers advice on cleaning child's environment, working with landlords, and consults with primary care physicians on screening of children (birth-6 yrs). Screening provided to special populations.
The Hamilton County Public Health Nursing Service is committed to providing preventative and restorative health services to the residents and guests of Hamilton County.
One of the most important jobs of any health department is to investigate diseases and outbreaks. Doctors, hospitals, and laboratories are required by law to report certain diseases to New York State Department of Health, which in turn reports to Broome County Health Department. These diseases include COVID-19, meningitis, measles, whooping cough, and many more.
If you get a call from our communicable disease staff, they will ask you questions to try to find out where the disease came from and who else might have been exposed, recommend ways to prevent further spread, and discuss treatment if needed. All information you share is kept confidential and is used to protect other people from getting a contagious disease.

The Division of Environmental Health reviews information generated during State and Federal hazardous site investigations and makes recommendations to protect the health and safety of Broome County residents. It assists other agencies with site investigations as needed. Staff evaluates new development proposals that involve the use or storage of toxic chemicals and makes suggestions on ways to avoid future environmental problems. Staff also provides guidance to Broome County residents who might have indoor air issues (mold, radon, etc.), outdoor air complaints/concerns or potential chemical exposures.
