Essex County Public Health works to support the health of our communities by promoting health and preventing disease, injury, and disability.
The Broome County Health Department offers Communicable Disease Control, which provides follow-up on certain communicable diseases. Information on communicable diseases and their prevention.
Exterminates bed bugs.
Communicable disease may be spread from person to person or animal to person through bodily fluids or direct contact. Spread of contagious disease may also occur by inhaling infected air or ingesting infected food or water. Essex County Public Health Department is responsible for minimizing the impact of communicable disease, through mandated activities such as investigation, reporting, education and outreach, and promoting prevention strategies. Essex County Public Health offers immunizations, prevention and control of rabies, tick and mosquito-borne disease, and education, screening, and counseling for HIV, HCV, and STD.
This program routinely investigates and aids in the prevention of the spread of reportable communicable diseases through investigation and education by Prevention Nurses Team and Environmental Health Staff. This involves interaction with county residents, medical facilities, nursing homes, local physicians, and other county health departments. It includes the following activities, as well as STD and TB testing and treatment:
Disease investigation and surveillance
Disease outbreak control and case management
Immunizations against infectious disease
Prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted disease
Tuberculosis screening and investigation
Full-service clinical laboratory and water testing services. Clinical lab is NYS certified: in addition, potable and non-potable water may be tested for bacteria and nitrate.

Other testing that is not available onsite is referred to Olean General Hospital.
